As someone who's been in this community for almost a decade, it's hard to say whether the community is more toxic or hostile to newcomers now than it was when I first joined. There's definitely been a change in atmosphere over the years, but it has really been mostly the same since March of 2018, and I think that it has more to do with this style of forum just not being suited to the typical post-modern user.
Back when I first joined, the WBO was
way more authoritarian, for lack of a better word, than it is now. We had basically outsourced moderation to some redpilled lowlife who didn't actually have any interest in the hobby itself, just moderation - so between his undeserved power and inability to relate to other users on the common ground that's
literally the foundation of this website, you can probably guess how toxic and hostile he was to newcomers. Many of the current generation of Staff members grew up with this piece of carp, and as a result, we've all tried to be more lenient and understanding with new users in comparison, though that's inadvertently led to a different kind of toxicity where people feel like they can get away with posting just about anything.
From what I've seen, most of the new users that have joined in 2018 or later (new compared to me at least, I kind of get whiplash seeing some of them called "older" haha) use the WBO like a chat room. There's nothing inherently
wrong with that, because it's a natural way to communicate, but it's just
not the WBO's intended function. All of these back and forth conversations generate tons of posts that, while they technically don't break any rules, lack any meaningful content. That's why we created a
Discord Server, a literal chatroom where you can have all the back and forth, one line discussions you need. If you don't want to or can't use Discord for whatever reason, we happen to have a handy PM system that I'm pretty sure has a group message functionality, so use that instead.
The attitude has done almost a complete 180 from "do not post unless you have something worth posting" to "post just for the sake of posting", and it's gotten to the point where some people will actively exploit this by creating multiple alt accounts to have conversations with themselves or create two threads for just random opposing off topic things (something like, i dunno, "favorite carrot recipes" and "least favorite carrot recipes"). I think the worst example is that one user that created like 5 different accounts, and their cover story for one was "this is my non-blader friend from real life" and all they ever did was get into arguments with their other alts and other users about things that had nothing to do with Beyblade, or even anything else (and people were
defending them?
Really?). At what point does this just become straight up spam, or trolling? This isn't reddit, there's no karma or reward you get for making lots of posts or getting lots of likes. Like, if you've made more posts in the past year than I have in my entire 9 year existence on the WBO, dial it back a little. Please.
This puts the mods in a tough spot though, because while we want to promote Beyblade discussion and keep people on topic, if we delete these kinds of posts and warn or ban these kinds of users,
we'll be seen as the toxic ones. I've definitely gotten some backlash for doing this in the past (even
WITHIN THE PAST HOUR OMG), and the guy before me, yall basically cyberbullied him into stepping down from the position. Trying to address the problem doesn't really help either, which is why you hardly see any of the mods doing it. This is probably just going to get like 10 likes, 3 different quote replies that say some variation of "i agree, nice post" (and nothing else) and change absolutely nothing about the overall outlook of people use the WBO.
