Ouya is a brand new video game platform built upon Android, that'll retail for $99. There's currently a Kickstarter campaign that you can see at the link above.
Interesting...

Is there a list of what games are gonna be on there? For just a 100 bucks, I'd probably buy it '_'
Looks cool. Maybe this will get me back into playing modern video games... But the console sounds a bit cheap to me...
The concept seems pretty interesting, but I feel like it's not for serious gaming at all. It sounds like it's pretty much for playing cell phone and home brew games on your TV. Nothing I'm interested in, but it might catch on.

It's probably more likely to be a cult thing. Maybe it'll turn out like Invader Zim. Nobody is interested while it's out, but everybody loves it when they don't make it anymore?
Gamasutra had some reservations about the platform's viability:

1. The Android Game Library is Barely Compatible with the OUYA.
2. The Android Game Library is Extremely Lackluster
3. Indies Will Not Fill the Void
4. The Userbase Problem
5. Some Things Just Don't Scale
6. Games are Moving Away From the TV
7. Android Specs Move too Fast

You can read the full reasonings behind the list here.
There were some good arguments against those in the comments, specifically the game library ones, to be fair.

The main reason I'm not sold on it is the rather poor specs, I mean, I guess it fills a niche for a cheap console but to be honest, with those specs I'm not seeing it gain a large enough audience, mainly because the hardcore audience won't move over. Plus, the fact it would be directly competing with the PC for audience and indie devs (and there are plenty of ways to hook your PC up to a TV) means I'm not seeing it catching on. That said, based on the number of people who have donated already, maybe I'm wrong, but yeah. I'm not much of a gamer, and a cheap console would be nice but Android Games so far haven't done much for me, a lot of it due to the limitations placed on them by specs (and I'm not even the "omg good graphixxxxx is da best" type), and I'd be surprised if Ouya managed to impress me much either.

That said, I would absolutely love to see it succeed, because I really like the direction they're going. I just don't see it happening.
They've announced that OnLive will be supported on Ouya. OnLive streams PC games. Unfortunately compared to their competitor Gaikai (which was recently purchased by Sony) their service offered is lacking in quality and is known for having worse compression and lag issues. Still, it's a good coup. Though, once again OnLive supports vanilla Android too.
Hey, I have a question for anyone who might know the answer, probably just To, the all-knowing mysterious fellow.

Will the Ouya support Steam? I've read that there's an app for Android phones and that, since the Ouya is basically a console android phone, the app would most likely be accessible too, but could I get a confirmation on that?

There's basically only a single game that I want to play on Steam, that being Recettear. Would that work? Uncertain
I'm fairly certain the mobile phone Steam app only allows you to check prices, no?
Uhh, no idea, honestly. That's a rather pointless app, if that's all it does XD

Oh well, looks like I really am doomed to never play that game T_T
Doujin games like that shouldn't be requiring top specs. If your computer is a mid-range from the last two or three years you'll probably be able to run it without problems.
Except it's a Mac... and Recettear doesn't exist on Mac XD Thanks anyway, though, To Joyful_3
That D-Pad...

Wow, that's bad
It looks like a rip off from Xbox. Minecraft, really?
Ouya joins PSP, iOS, vanille Android, and DS in getting Final Fantasy III.

It's the ugly 3D version. This also implies Ouya won't be able to access the general Google Play market as FFIII has been on Android for a while now.

Dual boot?
Yet another instance where you show your vast knowledge to a guy who can't understand it...

I somewhat googled it and... Don't really understand it. Is this safe? Uncertain

I gave Rettecear mac a quick google, apparently WINE and/or Crossovergames can run it (though maybe not with sound), that'd be a much simpler process than setting up dual boot for one game, haha. Just from a quick google but yeah, I'd personally not dual boot for a single game (even though the concept of that one is really neat!)

Anyway, as for Ouya, I think the big question is going to be the games. Probably worth mentioning right off the bat that I'm not much of a console gamer (or much of a gamer at all).
I'm definitely no expert on controller design (closest I've come is having used an original Xbox controller and finding it frustrating to say the least), but doesn't look *too* horrible to me. This'll sound dumb, but what's the issue with the D Pad? I mean to be honest that's like, the biggest criticism I've heard other than that list of 7 issues or whatever it was and honestly if a bad DPad is the worst issue with the console it must be pretty solid, haha.

But anyway, personally I think they've set the specs too low, which means the game library is going to be, uh... very casual, I guess, and there's that whole question of quality control... Not that that's bad, I just don't feel the spec thing suits their pitch too well. Don't get me wrong, I'm very much not into the "gotta hav gud graphix 4 good gamez" thing but it does seem to me that they're going to struggle to attract any "serious" titles.

Of course, there's the very, very valid counter-argument that "it's only $100", which is very tempting to say the least.
The d-pad looks like a very flimsy circle design. Outside of the SEGA Saturn controller those almost always turn out to be awful for comfort, response, and precision.
Ouya looks like something that jumped out of Halo, or Star Wars....

Nonetheless, it is pretty nifty.
Let's be honest, Ouya serves one main purpose; to raise some hell amoung the "Big 3". Now I am all about that

While I myself am not completely sold on this yet either, I will be cheering on. I look foward to seeing where this goes. This, in and of itself, is almost like a game, wouldn't you say? And like any great game, there are sure to be some nice suprises waiting for us Grin
Honestly I think any notion of competition with the big three is misguided, the specs and the price put it in a completely different range, though it could be a lucrative one, and it could have an effect on the big three, it's definitely not in a position to compete head on.

This is just looking at any new product. Most things in life (especially life itself) can be seen as a game, if you look at them in a certain way.
I'm not so sure this thing can be lucrative. Their business model seems kind of weird. They're likely making very little off of hardware sales at a $99 price point. They'll make even less when you figure they'll likely be earning 33% of software sales for games that are like 99 cents to $10. That doesn't even factor in the Google's cut (because I'm not sure how the revenue share for Ouya will be between Ouya people/Google/Developers) ...
Looks great
I would want to play it when it releases
My take on this is that this isn't just some random 3rd party nonsense that wants to make a bootlegged Wii console; these guys seem to know exactly what they want and what they will do. Plus, they already have added games such as Minecraft and a whole slew of other titles. Plus, I don't think they are going into this with empty wallets. If they would make such little pay off as you say, this would not have even been made in the 1st place. I am sure the creators of this console have worked out a ton of deals and contracts to ensure that they still have money.

As for the big 3, I don't ever foresee that number jumping up to 4. Not ever; the franchise has just become way to monopolized. What I do see, however, are many gamers who will own one or more of these big 3 consoles, in addition to Ouya. And if this company plays their marketing skills right, I can easily foresee this console in the homes of newer and causal gamers. Honestly, with the right people to represent it and market it, this could potentially become a significant part of the gaming industry
