The reason why Halo is so popular is BECAUSE it isn't so hardcore like COD4 is.
You can just jump in with your friends and have some really, REALLY over the top carp happen randomly that is always good for a laugh.
Then there's Forge where you can make some crazy carp maps and just have fun. Its much less serious than COD4.
I really like both games for different reasons, but they both have their pros and cons.

I usually play Social matches on Halo because everyone there is just trying to have fun.
That's where the crazy carp happens too,
whenever I play ranked its full of people on new accounts,
so the new players aren't ever really new,
and thus makes the teams really unbalanced and no fun.
not to mention it makes for a hard time because no one wants to loose.
But in CoD4 I barely find its strategic unless you play Hardcore modes
(which i absolutely love)
mostly its a lone wolf thing for me if I'm not playing those modes,
the teams barely communicate and usually each guy is doing own thing.
dont get me wrong i still adore both games.

Yeah, ever since Team SWAT went Ranked and Head 2 Head was added, I've been complete carp at it, since I either get matched up against guys with alt accounts (who usually have like 0 EXP and 50 skill) or guys that already have a much higher "highest skill level" than me in some other playlist and of course I get my carp kicked (not to mention the carp you get for not being "host", especially in Team SWAT). Getting guys with alt accounts seems to happen a lot more when you're just starting out fresh on a new playlist.
I'm only a 3 in Team SWAT and only ever won 2 matches (no thanks to me) since it became Ranked from all the ones I've played so far which is ridiculous. You'd think I'd at least be able to get to around the same skill level I have in Team Slayer (17), but I just can't do carp in it like this. I'd really like it if it just used an overall skill system instead of skill levels for different playlists. Besides alt accounts, I keep getting guys that go from 30 to 50 in highest skill, so I never really have a chance.
It's bad enough in Ranked, but on Social, where it doesn't even take into account skill level, you sometimes get like, a team full of guests and people who've just started playing, while the other team is a party of Generals, etc. Actually, I'm pretty sure there's a lot of high ranked guys who play Social just to beat on n00bs and get EXP. So it ends up being even worse sometimes, but maybe I'm just real unlucky with the match ups I get =(
About CoD4, I've never played it, but from what I've read and seen, it is more serious and hardcore, which would suck for me as I do bad enough in Halo 3 as it is and I've always been more of a casual gamer.

I've only played CoD4 once though, so my opinion isn't really valid. CoD4 is good, but it just isn't as fun as Halo. Maybe I just prefer the style of Halo; it's cool how real CoD4 looks and all that, but there is something about Halo that makes it much more inviting and fun to play. CoD4 seems so much more serious, both in gameplay and looks.
