The Wii version of Dead Space is officially an abortion.

A first person, on-rails shooter? Really?!

Ugggh carp Wii.

I've never played the original, but even though it is on rails, I still think it could be a good game. The recent House of the Dead: Overkill has gotten favourable reviews, so I have hope that this will turn out just as well.

Still though, that doesn't explain why they chose to make it on-rails.

No.

Just no.

Don't even try to stick up for this. Don't do it. I will destroy any argument you make.

You're making it sound as if you are sure it will be a horrible game, which is something you just can't prove ... That being said, it could turn out to suck, but I'm just saying to keep an open mind.

And like I said, I haven't played the original, but on-rails shooters can work well on the Wii.

You're right, I'm pretty sure this is going to be a horrible game. I can't prove it, but that doesn't mean I don't believe it.

On-rails shooters may work on Wii, but Dead Space depends on a slow rate of movement and absolutely relies on precision to take down your enemies. Oftentimes you have to stop completely to aim at the different enemies limbs, as dismemberment is the key to taking them down. How on Earth are you supposed to do that when you can't even control the character's movement? The game wasn't really ever scary before, but I imagine it will be even less scary now since you will basically be herded along, and I'm sure the game will be full of nothing but cheap monster closets since there's really no other way they'll be able to frighten players.

All of that aside, its a prequel, with a new character in a different setting. Maybe that will somehow save the game from being terrible, but I'm more than willing to bet it will work in reverse. Most of Dead Space takes place in claustrophobic hallways on a ship where you are essentially the only human being alive.

With this new game they are basically neutering the survival-horror aspect entirely and transforming it into an action game -- that may not sound like a bad thing, but I've played through Dead Space and I loved its incredibly tense atmosphere. For me that's what made the game so great and I'm really worried that that is going to be lost in this new Wii game.
I love banjo-kazooie: nuts & bolts so much it's my favorite
Most of those points are definitely valid Roan, and I understand the game better now because of it. However, just wanted to point out one thing; you said you need precision to take down enemies, I don't see how you wouldn't have that on the Wii.

In it's own respect though, as an action game, it may turn out to be alright. But I do understand that the game will lose a lot of its appeal to you if it is like you described.
kei why do you incessantly defend the wii despite the constant garbage it produces
Because there is a number of games released on the Wii that aren't garbage (believe it or not)!

edit: Oh, and I also think it is the most interesting platform.
Don't even give me the "oh the wiimote is soooo precise" carp -- its not. I'd take a pair of sticks over stupid, overrated and overhyped motion control any day.

They haven't said whether or not this game is using Motion Plus, but even if it is I don't think it will make much of a difference. Basically I am protesting this game and if it turns out to be good (it won't), then good for them, but I'm really not holding my breath.
Perhaps I should have been more specific, I was talking mostly about the pointer functionality of the Wii Remote. Considering it is on-rails, you will probably not be looking around a lot, so I don't see how you can get more precise than that!
I think I'm just sick of hearing about all the compromises that have to be made in order to make a game on the Wii fun. "Oh, well we can't make the real game we wanted to so we're making an on-rails first person arcade shooter instead of an atmospheric survival horror in the true tradition of Dead Space.

And yes, not every game that comes out for the Wii sucks. The overwhelming majority do.

I know what you mean. It really is inexcusable, third-person shooters have been proven to work on the Wii, and really well (see: RE4: Wii Edition). I just can't understand why developers constantly continue to push ports and spin-offs of major franchises onto the Wii.

No denying that.
The reason they do it is because the majority audience on Wii (read: casual gamers) are not interested in games like Dead Space, so they have to change them to appeal to that market otherwise the games won't sell for carp.

See: Zak and Wiki, Boom Blox, etc.

Yes, I understand that, we actually had this same discussion before lol. But, in the beginning a lot of core gamers were excited for the Wii (like yourself), but the lack of quality core games being produced by developers is what drove people like yourself away from the platform in the first place, eventually putting it into the position it is in today.

So really, the only people to blame are the developers for not putting enough effort into releasing good games on the Wii.
i only played a bit of zack and wiki but it was so good
Hey I'm not pointing fingers -- I already know who's fault it is.

It just upsets me to see developers taking awesome core franchises like Dead Space and neutering them for the Wii audience. Why they're doing it I haven't the slightest idea. Its clear that the Wii's audience is so distanced from core games that I don't even know why developers bother trying to make them for the system anymore.

I mean yeah, of course there is still that (retarded, jaded, deluded, ignorant, etc.) little group of hardcore Nintendo fans that think Nintendo can do no wrong (sup Litrid) and will buy anything that even resembles a core game because they are that dedicated to the company (which is stupid), but still that's not enough motivation for these huge megapublishers like EA to be making games like Dead Space: Extraction.

FFS, Dead Space is one of the goriest games I've played in a very long time -- how on Earth does that basic concept of dismembering your enemies mesh with the mom-and-grandma-friendly catalog of Wii games? The existence of this Dead Space game for Wii baffles me.

Exactly. What has me even more baffled however is why they didn't begin developing "hardcore" games for Wii in the first place. It doesn't matter who Nintendo was marketing it to at first, there was still a high level of interest among core gamers in the console, so there was no excuse for them not to.

Many people are disappointed with the Wii itself, but I am more disappointed with the way developers have acted during its life. Thankfully this year is not looking too bad for the Wii from a core gamers perspective. It's a shame it couldn't have been like this from the beginning.

I think Nintendo sees that they dont have to cater for the Hardcore Gamers anymore since they've made a ton more money off the Casual Gamers than ever. Its just business, I'd say if the whole Casual approach failed on them they'd go back to their original forumla, but for now they're going with it and are making a stack of cash in the process. Did anyone really think the Wii would be a serious Gamer console as soon as the Remote got revealed?
I find the "serious/hardcore" gamer moniker to be a little misleading. The fact of the matter is, when people say "hardcore" in reference to games, they're talking about quality games with substantial depth and challenge. That does not mean, impossible grind games that nobody but the most elite gamer can play. Ocarina of Time was a hardcore game, and it sold gangbusters, and was accessible to just about anyone. There are ways to make quality games that appeal to the masses; however, Nintendo has decided to forego that, and are just pumping out video game equivalent to fast food.
