All right, we're going to try this again. The last time we did reputation it didn't go so well, but I'd like it to this time.

Please give a positive reputation point to someone who has posted something that has helped you. If someone is clearly breaking the rules, posting false information or being rude, feel free to give them negative reputation. Be warned that perceived abuse of this system can result in banning.
We're going to add something to the rules about this, but just so I make this clear now:

Do not leave pointless comments when giving someone positive/negative rep. That is not how this system is supposed to be used.

An appropriate positive rep addition would be something like this:

"Answered a question of mine and explained a strategy I was having trouble with. +1"

An inappropriate addition would be something like this:

"The indian who will save the world +3"

We are issuing warnings through the new warning system to anyone who we find doing this. Just so you all know.
So you couldn't give someone a bad rating for having posts that are a total eyesore (no grammar, punctuation, run-on sentences, hard to read, etc.)? Or is it just for what is listed in Brad's OP?

Just want it to be clear.

No, giving negative rep for bad posts like what you mentioned is perfectly acceptable.

Giving rep based on character qualities is fine too. For instance, if someone is really nice to you on the board or is very helpful to others, giving them positive rep is encouraged.
Okay this needs to be said I've been running over in my mind for like 3 days about making this post and I decided to go ahead and do it. This system is a joke. All the old community members that get along are leaving each other comments. Brad has a carp load because he's the admin and brought us the site. Honestly for the purpose this system is supposed to serve it is giving a false impression to new people. It is just essentially a popularity contest.

Is this really the case, or are you just upset that you have no rep? :\

As far as I've seen, the rep left on everyone has been very good. The reputation isn't being abused and until you can link me to something that proves otherwise, I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

I see where Train is coming from. It does seem like just a system to see who is most popular, and Brad has Reps coming out of his...ears (Speechless).

However, I like the Reputation System. Good Rep tells you you're doing well, and Bad Rep lets you know that you need to work on becoming a better member here. I'm not just saying this because of my current Rep, I'm saying this because I like the Reputation System.

And Brad's immense amount of Reps aren't without reason, since he founded Beywiki and, more importantly, is incredibly helpful to everyone here.
I think Grey is a pretty good example of how the rep system is not biased towards older community members. Grey has been putting forth good posts, and he has a rep score he can be proud of.

The main reason a lot of the older members have higher rep is because we know more than the newer members, I'm not going to sugar coat it. We've been posting in the strategic bey community for years, we all know what we're doing. We've also been at these forums longer and thus have been able to add more to the community as a whole.

Annie for a start. People are just commenting about her tell it like it is attitude. Honestly I've been with the community probably longer than the majority on here. I'm just not a joiner. It's pretty sick you think this is about my rep. Grey seems to be a welcomed exception, but for people like Annie and Artie all their comments are based solely on personality traits and by people that have been here awhile.

Considering I used to on the original Beyblade Spirit when most of you had just joined heck some of you joined after me. I'm not gonna just sit here and take carp like that. Just because I hang back and don't put myself forward is no reason to assume I know less than you.

EDIT: Also Ommy and Bugturtles reps are both filled with stuff because of personality.
EDIT2: Should also point out I have nothing against Brad having a such good rep. He's easily the most knowledgeable here about the hobby, but a great deal of it has to do with thanking him for the site and whatever.

Why are you attacking me for something I didn't even say?

I never assumed that I knew more than you.

And in case you didn't notice, we have been ENCOURAGING positive/negative reputation giving based on personality. If someone is an carp on the board, then by all means they deserve negative reputation and vice versa. The entire point of the rep system is to give members a clear understanding of who is a quality contributor and who is not.

Wasn't directed towards you. It was towards Sexymicheal he made the comment that the longer you're hear the more you know because he had no idea how long I've been apart of the community for.

I was under the impression the rep system was for people to know who had quality knowledge about the hobby to offer and who didn't. The whole system seems misleading to me.
I don't think Michael was trying to insinuate that we have more knowledge than you or anything like that, I think what he meant to say was that those of us who have been a part of the community for a very long time (in some cases since the beginning of the hobby) are bound to be given positive rep because we know a lot about the game and are more able to help new players.

yes

And I don't think the rep system is misleading either. The rules of giving positive and negative rep. are clearly stated.
It's pointless then. It's just saying oh this person is nice if it doesn't have a point it's just a popularity contest. Oh this person is great he's a Guido oh she tells it like it is. This isn't anything more than to see who is more popular. Basically if I'm wrong and you can just comment nice things about the person and it has nothing to do with knowledge or helpfulness about the hobby it is a pointless system.

You also need to consider that this is a forum community. A lot of people are here to have fun and talk with old friends. Just because MFB was announced, we aren't going to radically change the boards. Nice people get rep because nice people are a great addition to a forum community, they make people feel welcome. Not to mention that even though most rep comments aren't beyblade related, pretty much every single person here with high rep is a beyblade vet.
If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple as that.

Its not like this has any real effect on the board as a whole.
Honestly, this is probably the only gross misuse of rep so far:
http://forums.beywiki.com/reputation.php?uid=268

Sure, you can argue that Artie and Annie don't deserve certain things (granted, they are dicks half the time, and should be given negative rep because of their rudeness, but heck, that never happens, so blame the users, not the system).

The thing is, this community has been together for a long time. Rep is just another way to show which members here are considered trustworthy and you can listen to. I don't know if the negative rep will prevent some people from listening to people with negative rep, or if Grey really gains more respect because of his +6, but this at least shows something about knowledge and general agreeability without going into the advanced blader system.

Not to mention, the reps you are referencing, Train, are from the first rep system. Look at the dates. Back then, the rep system was a mess. I mean, it would be nice if those were deleted/updated, but that's just a bit stupid.

Gee thanks Flashfox. Mind pointing me to all of these rude posts that I make?

As for your complaint Train, I'm sorry but it's not a very good one. I'm not going to get into it a lot because most of it has been said, but I have a suggestion: if you have a problem with the reputation system, contribute more. You've been here for almost a year and you don't even have 500 posts yet. You're more of a lurker than anything, so no one really knows you all that well. I didn't even know you were Ozuma until a month or two ago when someone told me.
It honestly doesn't matter to me what rep I get on these forums, as my interests on these boards are more towards people than the hobby. As such, I can only assign meaningful reputation to those I know a lot better than others (most of the time I'm ultra lazy with these as well - there are still several other people I would like to assign rep to when I get around to it - Flashfox is an example).

In any case, because of the nature of my involvement on these forums, the reputation I assign is based on what I think of you as a person after getting to know you better through the sections in which I read and post.

And this.

Honest to god I think you're just bitter about this because no one has repped you so far. I mean really, what harm is having this system in place doing? As Michael correctly pointed out, those members with high reputation ratings are generally the ones who have been in the community for a very long time and generally know what the carp they are talking about when it comes to Beyblade and other subjects.

If we were to use the reputation system based purely on beyblade input, it would be even more pointless because at this point in time we're all just repeating the same damn things about MFB. Hardly anyone even has them right now, and no one really feels like discussing old parts from HMS/Plastic gen, and for good reason.

Part of what makes a successful community is not just having members who contribute a lot, but who are also pleasant people to have in a community. Personally I know I don't say much when it comes to beyblade, but that's because I know my place. My knowledge has admittedly become a little rusty, so I only contribute to something when I am fairly certain that I know for sure what I'm talking about. Does that make me any less valuable as a member? Of course not. I'm still here, I still do my job as an administrator despite my roller coaster interest in the hobby, and I help out people wherever I can.

I'm proud to say that most members here are the same way. We've all had our squabbles in the past, but we do a pretty damn good job of getting along and solving our own problems when they come up. But no matter who it is we're talking about, almost all of the veteran members here are people who are willing to help with whatever questions or problems may arise, and why on Earth shouldn't they be rewarded or, in this case, given reputation for that?

EDIT: As per your complaint about Brad's sky high reputation, why doesn't he deserve that? Don't you think he's contributed a tremendous amount to the well-being of this community? Don't you think he should be commended for opening this site and starting the entire Wiki, as well as funding it out of his own pocket? If you ask me, your perception of this whole thing is a little skewed. As Artie said, you're more or less a lurker here, so no one really knows a whole lot about you. As he also said, I had no idea you were Ozuma until I checked the logs in the Admin CP and saw that you had changed your name, and even still, I knew little to nothing about you as Ozuma, so the point still stands. I'm not trying to attack you personally, but your reasoning for this complaint is a little frustrating because its, well, wrong.

If you read my edit I did say Brad did deserve a higher rep simply because of his involvement in the Japanese community his knowledge of the game and anime and for creating sites such as these, but by that logical people like Kai-V and Nic should also have sky high reps because of all of their knowledge. His rep should be higher no doubt, but it's in a ridiculous size at the moment compared to other large contributors.

The fact that you're all arguing that the rep system is just something for new people so they can see who is nice or not? That's a load. My complaint is valid this rep system shouldn't be used to just show "nice" people it should be about the game and knowledge there in a reference for people to know whom to believe and whom not to believe.

As for me changing my name it shouldn't matter. People don't know me because I'm not a memorable person. I've met Brad 5 seperate times at conventions as well as Elliot and neither has remembered meeting me at any of these. You're not the only one that doesn't know a lot about me.

This is coming off as a personal attack on me unintentionally simply because I seem to be the only one having this problem with the rep system. Everyone here defends everyone else because of the longevity of their relationships with one another. I don't have an issue with any of that it's just me pointing out a fact.

I would be contributing a lot more if I didn't have to work as much as I do. I simply cannot respond to questions or write an article because I'm never around with questions and other people answer faster. As for the articles I'd rather not run off something half-assed and put my name on it. I would want to take time to write it and do a decent job of it which I simply cannot do.
While there are things that have already been said, you don't have to use this system. You can completely disregard, because it just shows trustworthiness and people with good qualities. This system can be used effectively and can be used to motivate other members to post better if you look at it through this perspective.

For the majority of us, I think this system works.

So no one has a good relationship with you, you don't contribute much because you're busy...how exactly are you going to get reputation?

You can cry foul all you want but considering that you don't even post on the board that much (whether that be by choice or time constraint), how can you expect to have high reputation?

Also, is this really that big of a deal? Really?
