I haven't been into Beyblade since the early 2000s. I'm trying to get into it but it seems different than what I remember. Any advice on what I should buy/do to get me started?

Check topic Winning Combinations at WBO Organized Play Events at General section to get idea what meta parts currently are.
At Wiki you can find handy list of Takara Burst products to check where those parts are found.

Since you found proper topic for question at first try, I guess that's better to explore yourself.
Youtube videos can help too, but they are often biased towards newest release, or combos are not even shown. Shouldn't trust everything shown there.
